Aesthetics in Baseball
Aesthetics
When it comes to objects in our lives, anything can have aesthetics when looked at in the proper way. That is why with this assignment I decided to use my 2013 Baltimore Orioles baseball to see what ways I could show these different ideas. As I worked through taking the pictures, I discovered that there was a lot more that I could do than I had originally thought, which made for a fun photo shoot of taking all types of different pictures of something as simple as a baseball.
Detail
The first picture that I decided to take was one that showed detail in the baseball. With this picture I wanted to get closer in on the stitching to show what worked to keep the cover of the ball together. This was a fun shot to take because I wanted to get a detailed enough show to show the ties in the stitching as well as the detail on the cover of the ball itself.
Symmetry
With this photo I wanted to take advantage of the stitching of the ball as I did in the detail shot. My goal with this was to use the stitching as the symmetry on the ball as it surrounds the logo and the year. The only problem with this was that it was hard to avoid getting parts of the signatures on the ball out of the shot completely, which does take away slightly from the symmetry of the ball.
Angle
I chose to go for an angle shot for this blog as a way to show the other sides of the ball as well. This technique helped me to show some of the signatures on the ball from the right side. With using angles it helped me to look at the ball from a lot of different angles and not just from the front angle which only has the Orioles logo as well as the year on it.
Negative Space
With this technique I tried to take advantage of the off white walls by my desk as a way to get some space around the ball unlike where my other pictures where the whole picture is essentially just the ball itself. It was hard to get this to work due to the limited amount of space on my desk but it helped a lot when I backed up from where I was taking the other photos to really be able to get more of the wall to provide that negative space.
Framing
Of the techniques I tried to do, I felt like framing was the toughest one for me to try and put together. My attempt at framing came by using the edge of my keyboard and the higher up edge of my desk as a way to act as a frame for the ball. While I feel it would have worked much better had my keyboard been higher up and as tall as the edge piece of the desk, it was still enjoyable to work the shot and find the right angle that could work somewhat as a frame.
As a whole, I found this experience to be quite enjoyable. It was interesting to take the spot where I put the baseball and working from different angles and viewpoints to find different ways to show it off. It was also fun to use the different techniques to see the differences between the photos I took and really see how much of a difference they make in viewing them.
